Boris Johnson has rejected calls for airport testing, claiming that screening all passengers would create a “false sense of security” because it identifies only 7 per cent of asymptomatic cases. The prime minister said there was no way to avoid the need for travellers who arrive in the UK to undergo a period of quarantine. During a visit to Solihull he said that he understood the difficulties faced by the aviation industry but claimed that testing on entry only identifies a fraction of cases in virus carriers who are showing no symptoms.
