That’s not reasonable.” Residential schools in Canada were a network of institutions that began in the 1800s, with the last school closing in 1996. At the time, Webber said residential schools and their history were known about in government, but weren’t part of the public discussions like they are today. When asked whether residential schools did have positive effects, he responded he didn’t know, but students should not be stopped from exploring the question.
