Algerian dairy processor Giplait opens a new plant in Rouiba, described as the largest in North Africa

Algeria’s state-owned dairy group Giplait has inaugurated a new industrial dairy plant in Rouiba, described as the largest in North Africa and a key pillar in Algeria’s food security strategy. Giplait, via 17 subsidiaries nationwide, already covers 52% of Algeria’s pasteurised milk market. The new Rouiba dairy extends over 4 hectares to allow future expansion, and its UHT line can process 15,000 litres per hour. The plant’s total capacity exceeds 1.2m litres per day, including one million litres of subsidised pasteurised milk sold at regulated prices. In January, Giplait CEO Samah Lahlouh met with leading Russian dairy processor EkoNiva to discuss a future partnership that could involve knowledge transfer and the introduction of advanced farm management models.
