To the right you can also make out Alpha Centauri, which is a binary star with two Sun-like components. Basically what we know so far is that the signal appears to come from the direction of Proxima Centauri, a nearby red dwarf star that is also tied to the Alpha Centauri binary system some four light years away. Proxima Centauri is known to host at least two planets that could be earth-like, at least in size and composition. Let’s remember that Proxima Centauri is an active star that’s likely bathing any nearby planets in sterilizing radiation from frequent solar flares. Shostak also says the signal could actually be coming from something much further away that just happens to be behind Proxima Centauri.
