GANGNEUNG, South Korea—Alina Zagitova, a 15-year-old Russian, upended her compatriot, training mate and back-to-back world champion Evgenia Medvedeva to take gold in Olympic women’s figure skating Friday with feats of endurance thought impossible just four years ago. Zagitova landed 10 triple jumps—all in the second halves of her short and long programs—this week at the Gangeung Ice Arena, including her “Don Quixote” free skate, each scoring a 10% bonus. Medvedeva, 18, finished second to teammate Alina Zagitova. Zagitova declined to comment on how she would feel watching the Olympic flag go up when she received her medal. Snapping at the heels of Medvedeva and Zagitova are talented juniors including one who has attempted a quadruple jump in competition.
