"We are trying to do a service to the nation. No progress can be made in the country if the judiciary is not efficient. No foreign investors would invest in the country if judiciary is not efficient. We must put our best foot forward," the bench said.The court passed the observation when counsel appearing for West Bengal government and Calcutta High Court strongly opposed SC proposal for centralised mechanism for judicial appointment in lower judiciary. It was made clear to them that state government's power to appoint judges would not be taken away.
