Almost 450 hate crimes and hate-related incidents were recorded across the country last year, data shows. The Garda’s latest hate crime figures found there were 389 hate crimes and 59 hate-related incidents last year. In 2021, 448 hate crimes and hate related (non-crime) incidents were recorded in Ireland. In 2019, the last complete year prior to the introduction of the changes, there were 251 crimes with a hate motive recorded, a notable reduction on the 339 hate crimes recorded in 2018. Under the previous recording practices, any one of 11 specific hate motives could be recorded on crime incidents.
