In a brief speech during the Night of African Fraternity, an event promoted by the government of Ethiopia to strengthen the unity among the states of the continent, the diplomat highlighted the ‘deep cultural component’ of the African legacy in the Caribbean nation. Lefebre highlighted the African participation ‘in our struggle against Spanish colonialism’ and the Cuban contribution ‘to the independence or protection of nations in this region’. Because of its historic ties with Ethiopia, Cuba was chosen to organize the Night of African Fraternity, a cultural exchange with students from different African countries, in which Ethiopian graduates from the island, members of the accredited medical brigade and Cuban residents participated. Since last September 19, a government committee and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs have been organizing different meetings to help strengthen relations between the peoples of Africa, especially among young people. In addition to the Cuban embassy, the embassies of 13 African countries and South Korea are also participating in the program.
