A fatal brain infection reportedly took the life a Seattle woman who doctors believe improperly used a neti pot. In January, she had a seizure and was taken to Swedish Medical Center in Seattle. A scan of the woman’s brain revealed a lesion on the right side. Getty Commercial Balamuthia mandrillaris, shown in a computer illustration, is a single-celled organism found in water and soil in temperate regions. Infections are rare, but it can cause granulomatous amoebic encephalitis (GAE) of the brain, which is almost always fatal.
