Anthony Gordon went to Euro 2024 and felt invisible to Gareth Southgate. At the World Cup this summer, Thomas Tuchel will be seeing double. He had just named a squad for England’s final two World Cup qualifiers with just one recognised striker, Kane, within it. For Newcastle, Gordon is no longer the makeshift striker billed as such back in August, when the team waited for reinforcement. Were any misfortune to befall Kane, it could be that stage of a World Cup that awaits in the same role.
