Appeal by Bangladeshi Tannery workers union for charter of demands

Recently the Tannery Workers Union, representing tannery workers, appealed to the Government and relevant authorities to address their charter of demands. Their requests include the establishment of a ‘Tannery Board’ and a new wage board to set a minimum wage of Taka 25,000, as well as ensuring job security for the workers. During a ‘Consultation Meeting with Journalists’ at a city hotel, the Tannery Workers Union (TWU) president, Abul Kalam Azad, raised their additional demands, including setting up a 50-bed hospital for tannery workers and others concerned, ensuring social compliance with full implementation of maternity welfare facilities, complete implementation of waste management and CETP to build an eco-friendly and modern leather city, and working towards achieving the Leather Working Group certificate. The ‘Consultation meeting of Tannery Workers Union with Bangladesh Labour Rights Journalists Forum’ was organised by the Solidarity Centre-Bangladesh Office, with Kazi Abdul Hannan, the president of BLRJF, presiding over the event. Various prominent individuals participated in the discussion, including Abdul Malek, the general secretary of TWU, and Md Ataur Rahman, the general secretary of BLRJF.
