Appeal looms over legal basis for early coronavirus lockdown rules

(File photo)As waves of coronavirus restrictions continue to lap the country, a court case about the legality of early lockdown rules looks set to rise again. Wellington lawyer, Andrew Borrowdale, personally took a High Court case challenging the legal basis for several parts of early lockdown restrictions. Borrowdale has appealed against those findings, and a Court of Appeal decision issued on Monday revealed that he now had a prominent Queens Counsel, Jim Farmer, representing him. He originally represented himself, but had a lawyer act for him at the High Court hearing. The New Zealand Law Society was allowed to make submissions in the High Court, and asked to take part in the appeal too.
