Over the past 48 hours, we’ve seen the first wave of businesses announcing temporary—often open-ended—shutdowns because of the global health crisis. Tellingly, Apple was one of the first retailers to close its stores within China at the outset of the coronavirus outbreak. Patagonia, the outdoor apparel retailer, also said on Friday that it would be closing its 37 stores in North America for at least two weeks. This new wave of retail closings is now extending to the restaurant trade as well. Danny Meyer, who operates 20 restaurants around the country under his Union Square Hospitality Group, has closed all of them for an indefinite period.
