Apple said on Thursday that it would expand its operations in Austin, Tex., with a new $1 billion campus that would nearly double the size of the company’s current 6,000-employee work force in the area. It employs 90,000 people across the United States. “Apple is proud to bring new investment, jobs and opportunity to cities across the United States and to significantly deepen our quarter-century partnership with the city and people of Austin,” Tim Cook, Apple’s chief executive, said in a statement. The announcement comes as other tech giants seek to expand beyond their West Coast roots. Amazon last month announced parts of New York and Virginia as the winners of its yearlong beauty contest for a new headquarters, while Google is said to be considering more than doubling its 7,000-employee work force in New York.
