Are bigger wind turbines always better?

As per the Global Wind Energy Council’s Global Wind Report 2022, 557GW of new wind capacity is expected post-2022 under current policies. The Østerild National test centre for large wind turbines in Western Jutland, Denmark, is testing the Vestas’ V236-15MW prototype. However, several wind turbine manufacturers have experienced failures, such as a blade detaching from a wind turbine in Iowa in mid-February 2023, a wind turbine collapse in Wisconsin in January 2023 and a wind tower that buckled in half in mid-June 2022, splaying turbine blades across a wheat field. Horizontal-axis wind turbines dominate the conventional wind turbine market, but there are different takes on the oldschool windmill popping up worldwide, with varying effects. The omnidirectional wind turbines are integrated into the design of the building to collect wind from both north and south.
