Artist Tony Albert Reclaims Negative Portayals Of Aboriginals At Art Basel In Hong Kong

Courtesy Art Basel in Hong KongBefore Australia was colonized by the British in 1788, some 280 Aboriginal language groups existed—that number has dwindled to only 80 as populations dismantled, or were killed off. In an effort to reclaim this representation, Albert began collecting the objects of Aboriginalia, amassing some 10,000 pieces. The place where he saw aboriginals was on ashtrays, and tea towels, and velvet paintings, and copper art. Thai artist Mit Jai Jinn employed a community of Uyghurs to paint colorful neon layers in “Planes (Electric),” evoking the energy and vibrance of the city of Hong Kong.
