Assistant Syariah Court registrar acquitted of bribery charge


KUANTAN: A Syariah Court assistant registrar raised his hands in prayer after he was acquitted by the Sessions Court here of receiving RM3,500 bribe to invalidate a couple's marriage in Thailand three years ago. Later, outside the courtroom, Mohd Kahar Arshad, 50, hugged his lawyer Ahmad Nizam Hamid. The Pekan Syariah Court assistant registrar was accused of taking bribe in the form of cash from Hurul-Ain Hanafi, 33, as inducement to invalidate her marriage with Mohamed Zaki Ahmad Ghazali, 40. On Aug 21, 2015 at the Sessions Court here, he was charged with the graft offence. In the course of trial, 10 witnesses testified for the prosecution while Kahar was the sole witness for the defence.
