D.C. Police Chief Peter Newsham was named interim police chief on Tuesday to take over for Cathy L. Lanier who announced her retirement last week to become security chief for the National Football League. He joined the department in 1989 and has been an assistant chief since 2002. Mayor Muriel E. Bowser (D) is continuing a search for a permanent chief but said the hunt will concentrate on internal candidates. Matthew Mahl, a police sergeant and chairman of the labor union, said Newsham’s experience makes him ideal to serve as interim. Another assistant chief being discussed as a candidate is Kimberly Chisley-Missouri, who joined the force in 1990 and heads internal affairs.
