'Astronomical numbers': St. John's food banks, shelters face rising demand


On a Monday morning at St. John's food bank Bridges to Hope, shelves are stocked and ready for clients who will be looking for anything from margarine to hygiene products over the next four days. Many of them visit one of the 60 provincial food banks which are members of the Community Food Sharing Association. The association distributes items to the food banks from its St. John’s distribution centre. Shelters at capacity, with waitlists for housingIn downtown St. John's, Jen Crowe agrees. According to the End Homelessness St. John's dashboard, 473 people in St. John’s were homeless in December 2025.
