At 59.6%, JNU voter turnout higher this year

NEW DELHI: Till the candidates from Birsa Ambedkar Phule Students Association (BAPSA) filed their nominations, the Left had no inkling they'd present the main challenge. The new group's, and especially it's presidential candidate, Sonpimple Rahul Punaram's, extraordinarily strong position on the Jawaharlal Nehru University campus this election has surprised everyone. 59.6% of an electorate of about 8,600 voted in the JNU students' union polls on Friday -- a turnout significantly higher than last year's 53%. AISA is one half of Left Unity --- the other is Student's Federation of India --- and its candidate Mohit Kumar Pandey is the only candidate from the Left contesting for president. Some of our members will vote Left Unity, some, BAPSA.
