At Monaco, It’s First All Work, and Then Play


90 years ago, Monaco staged its first grand prix. Beautiful black and white images of that 1929 race show the circuit to be virtually untouched. Except for some sandbags and straw bales, preparatory work was minimal. Because this is a circuit carved out of the Monaco streets where people live and work, organizers try to reduce the disruption for residents and businesses by working quickly, and after it’s over, everything is removed in three weeks. The man in charge of making all of this happen is Christian Tornatore, general commissioner of the Automobile Club de Monaco, which puts on the event.
