Secretary General António Guterres said in a statement. U.N. officials said 53 peacekeepers also were wounded in the attack, and at least five members of Congo’s military were killed. In recent months, violence has spiked with clashes involving rebels and security forces as well as inter-communal fighting. More than 300 U.N. personnel have been killed in Congo since 2001, according to U.N. records.
