They came from Israel, America, Russia, Britain and Peru, frail and bundled up in layers against the Polish winter. For many it would be their last visit and their message to the world was urgent. More than 200 survivors of Auschwitz gathered by its “Gate of Death” at 3.30pm yesterday to commemorate the liberation of the camp by the Red Army 75 years ago. They were joined by national representatives including the Duchess of Cornwall, the German and Israeli presidents and scores of political and religious leaders. Survivors, many of them conscious that there was not much time left for them to bear witness, stood at the podium and urged their audience to learn from their experience of the evil of which mankind is capable
