The prime minister criticised the BBC and said it was time “we stopped our cringing embarrassment about our history, about our traditions, and about our culture”. Politicians from across the spectrum joined the condemnation of the corporation. Speaking to Tory MPs after the BBC’s U-turn today, Boris Johnson said the country was going through an “orgy of national embarrassment”.
