One of the BBC’s most respected foreign correspondents is stepping down after being diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) linked to his reporting from war zones. Fergal Keane, who has covered the Rwandan genocide, Kosovo war and invasion of Iraq in his 30-year career, has decided to leave his post as the corporation’s Africa editor. The Irish journalist has been dealing with the effects of PTSD privately for several years and has been receiving medical advice, but “now feels he needs to change his role in order to further assist his recovery”, the BBC said.
