County Councillor and retired Defence Forces member Pat Balfe has announced, with regret, his decision to step away from the Social Democrats party and continue to serve as an Independent representative. Cllr Balfe was elected on the party's ticket for the Kildare Local Electoral Area in the Local Elections in June 2024. Balfe confirmed that his decision rests primarily on his lived experience as a member of the Defence Forces. Balfe noted that the challenges currently facing the Defence Forces reflect long-term pressures.“The condition our Defence Forces face today reflects years of underinvestment. Balfe concluded by stating that while he leaves the party with regret, he does so with clarity and continued dedication to public service as an Independent councillor.
