Balclutha Raft Race takes to the riverMary-Jo Tohill South Otago High School teachers got first bragging rights in the return of the Big River Raft Race held at Balclutha on Saturday. The winning team pictured, left, Harrison Hoegh, Max Hoegh and Rui Li, with their craft Mama Alligator, sponsored by Studio Fit. It was like a community event of old, but with a more safety-concious bent, when a flotilla of hard-case home-made craft took to the Clutha River, for the return of the district's Big River Raft Race on Saturday. However, the super-fit three-man team who won the event, in a rig made of scavenged half-sawn plastic drums, treated the race as a challenge, team member South Otago High School teacher Max Hoegh, said. The team, which consisted of Hoegh's brother, Harrison, and their friend Rui Li, who also teaches at South Otago High School, paddled away with a $600 prize.
