Bangladesh’s food import hits second highest in 10 years

This fiscal’s import volume is also second highest in a decade, according to the statistics of the Food Planning and Monitoring Unit (FPMU) of the Ministry of Food. Sources at the ministry confirmed the Dhaka Tribune on Saturday that except for the 2017-18 financial year, the country’s food import volume was never this high in past 10 years. Besides, over the past two decades or so Bangladesh’s domestic wheat production slumped from two million tons a year to just over a million tons now whereas, demand for wheat reaches to nearly seven million tons a year. Over the past one decade, Bangladesh imported highest volume of foodgrains (9.7 million tons) after the Haor flood in 2017-18. And, the 2020-21’s import volume (6.6 million tons) stands only second to that in last 10 years.
