Bill to remove per country cap on Green Card introduced in U.S. Congress

A bipartisan legislation has been introduced in the U.S. House of Representatives to eliminate the per country cap on employment-based Green Card, a move which is likely to benefit Indian IT professionals languishing over decades of waiting for the Permanent Resident Card. “We all know that our immigration system is severely broken and it has been broken for decades,” said Ms. Lofgren, Chair of the House Subcommittee on Immigration and Citizenship on Wednesday. The bipartisan EAGLE Act moves our country toward a system that de-emphasises birthplace and better serves America. The EAGLE Act is one of the first bipartisan immigration bills that members of the House have introduced this year, it noted. “Every member of Congress now agrees that it is morally and legally indefensible to have a discriminatory per-country-based allocation system for employment-based Green Cards that bans talented Indian immigrants from receiving green cards during their lifetime if they apply today,” Mr. Kapoor said.
