The Irish Catholic Bishop's Association suggested 6,542 early abortions were from pregnancies which may have been "inconvenient or untimely". Earlier this week, the Department of Health published a report which said there had been 6,666 legal terminations carried out in Ireland last year. The Irish Catholic Bishops said there was "absolutely no moral justification for deciding a baby should die because he or she has a serious health condition". Of the terminations carried out in Ireland last year, 98pc were early abortions before 12 weeks. The Irish Catholic Bishops Association said each termination was "a unique and precious human being".
