#BlackMeToo rally held at Alberta legislature

EDMONTON—Demonstrators gathered at the steps of Alberta’s legislature building on a chilly Saturday afternoon to break the silence surrounding gender-based violence against Black women. Beverley Elliott, one of the founders of Black Women United YEG, helped organize a rally at the Alberta legislature on Saturday to highlight the unique issues Black women face in the #'MeToo movement. To highlight the unique challenges Black women face when speaking out against violence and injustice, the group chose the theme #BlackMeToo for the Edmonton event. “The ‘Me Too’ movement was started by a Black woman, but it was little bit co-opted by a white feminist movement,” Elliott said. “It could be Black women, it could be Latin women, it could be women of all different cultures and backgrounds.
