“I’ve spent more than half my life pointed northward,” Braverman writes at the outset of her memoir Welcome to the Goddamn Ice Cube. “Whereas before I had regarded sex with Dan as an interesting experiment,” Braverman writes, “it now struck me as grotesque.” Even his “stupid Canadian accent” grates. Braverman now lives with the love of her life in northern Wisconsin – where she trains and races sled dogs. Meanwhile the true love of her life remains the sled dogs, which do not disappoint her. She was fascinated by the far North and the cold, as if these could yield answers to the mysteries of life.
