Bluebells and chalk streams: wildlife in South Oxfordshire goes under microscope

South Oxfordshire’s “rich variety” of wildlife has been explored in a new biodiversity report published by the district council. Carpets of woodland bluebells and chalk grasslands both play a key part in helping support 171 threatened species of plants and animals, identified in the report. South Oxfordshire District Councillor Mike Giles, cabinet member for climate action and nature recovery, said improving the region's environment was a “key objective” for the local authority. Woodland is identified as an important aspect of the region’s natural resources, with some plant species being commonplace despite struggles elsewhere. “Whilst bluebells are widespread in Oxfordshire woodlands, particularly the Chilterns, they are under threat globally,” the report said.
