Over the past two weeks, headlines have trumpeted choice bits from Bob Woodward’s new book, “War”: How then-President Donald Trump secretly sent coronavirus test machines to Russian President Vladimir Putin. In Ukraine, Woodward describes a team at peak tactical performance. The Biden team views its subsequent management of the conflict as no less impressive. The keystone of that containment was a crisis in autumn 2022 over the potential use of a Russian nuclear weapon. This book’s prologue is based on a hitherto “lost” tape of a 1989 interview with Trump by Woodward and his Watergate partner, Carl Bernstein.
