I think we may have to look at The Conjuring franchise as the horror equivalent of Illumination’s Despicable Me series. Annabelle: Creation earned a promising $15 million on Friday night, including franchise-high $4m in Thursday previews. That this “prequel to the prequel to The Conjuring” didn’t miss a beat, at least in the first 24 hours, shows that this Conjuring franchise is more than a cinematic universe. Annabelle ended up with $84 million domestic along with an obscene $256m worldwide on a $6m budget. And if friggin Annabelle: Creation can score $35-$40 million, well, that is only good news for It dropping a month from now.
