So… what happens when the annual “start the new year with a schlocky grindhouse horror movie” entry turns out to be good? Anyway, director Adam Robitel’s $9 million-budgeted flick earned a solid $18m over its debut weekend. That’s a pretty good (for a horror flick) 2.3x weekend multiplier and positions the flick to potentially top $45m domestic by the end. Escape Room, which is as much a psychological thriller as a horror movie (it earns its PG-13 the honest way), is probably the best of these since Daybreakers back in 2010. That isn’t saying much, but, yes, Escape Room is actually pretty darn good.
