Box Office: 'It' Floats To Record-Crushing $51M Friday

All this fretting about the poor August box office and the downturn in summer grosses, and a $35 million, R-rated horror movie with no movie stars to speak of is going to probably top $100m this weekend. Before yesterday, the record for an R-rated, non-sequel horror opening weekend was The Conjuring, with its $41 million debut in 2013. So yeah, me thinks Hannibal’s $58 million opening weekend benchmark (the biggest for an R-rated horror movie) is going to fall right… about… now. The irresponsibly optimistic scenario is a weekend like Split (2.73x) which would give the picture a $140 million debut weekend. It will unquestionably take the record for the biggest September (Hotel Transylvania 2’s $48 million debut) and October (Gravity’s $55m debut) opening weekend.
