As such, it shouldn't be too much of a surprise that Sony's Miss Bala barely moved the needle over the weekend. With poor reviews and little in the way of buzz, this Gina Rodriguez thriller never really had a chance. As such, with lousy reviews (a 29% rotten and 4.8/10 score on Rotten Tomatoes) and no buzz, Miss Bala earned $6.7 million over its debut weekend. The original Miss Bala was a relentless descent into hell, with a genuine whirlpool-of-doom feeling and plenty to say about the cruelty and immorality of the War on Drugs. Mikkelson having a buzzy (but quite lousy) Netflix movie (Polar) with a vaguely similar title opening almost concurrently probably didn't help.
