Far from delivering the clarity many claimed, this week left most observers outside the UK — and many within it — bewildered as to what the British political system is doing. As negotiations go, this one seems to involve a lot more talking to itself than engaging with the interlocutor. The interlocutor — the EU — seems to be an exasperated backdrop to the interminable “action” in the House of Commons. As Brexit draws closer and the realities of what it will mean become clearer we expect changes in attitudes, or at least softening of positions. What was once Project Fear is becoming concrete as companies such as Airbus make ever bleaker announcements about future investment.
