British betting crackdown may yet pay out for Paddy Power


The booming bookmaking industry may be approaching something of a tipping point. A fresh review of the sector by the UK’s Gambling Commission is to examine a ban on bookmakers advertising before 9pm, and bookies’ use of social media. Paddy Power Betfair (PPB) has been a pioneer when it comes to using social media to support a strong brand built through clever TV advertising. News of the UK review sent PPB shares down 5% on Friday. The company share price had already been nursing losses as a result of a regulatory clampdown in Australia, its second-largest market.
