The trial of the three people accused of killing two British-South African botanists came to a grinding halt in the KwaZulu-Natal High Court in Durban on Wednesday when the defence failed to meet its own deadline for filing papers calling for the state prosecutor's recusal in the matter. Aslam Del Vecchio, 43; his wife Fatima Patel, 32; and Malawian national Ahmad Jackson, 41, face charges of murder, theft, and assault in connection with the killing of Rodney Saunders, 73, and his wife, 63-year-old Rachel Saunders. The Saunders couple were celebrated botanists who held dual citizenship in South Africa and the UK.
