British computer scientist suspected to be Bitcoin’s secret inventor

A British computer scientist has been named as the possible inventor of Bitcoin. Adam Back, a 55-year-old programmer born in London, was identified after a year-long investigation by the New York Times into the identity of Satoshi Nakamoto. Mr Back is a major figure in the Bitcoin community who founded the technology company Blockstream and who now lives in Malta. Craig Wright, an Australian computer scientist who had claimed to be Bitcoin’s creator, was ordered by the High Court in 2024 to stop claiming he was Satoshi. His online Bitcoin wallet holds around 1.1 million Bitcoins, which would be worth around $79bn (£58bn).
