The start of the season is a long way away and a lot of things can happen,” Sweeney said Monday after the Bruins rookie team finished up play the Prospects Challenge at KeyBank Rink. The Bruins are scheduled to pay their eight defensemen just north of $21 million this season. The rest of the group will stay in North America and play a couple games while the split squad is away. The unique situation could give someone not considered a roster candidate, up front or on defense, a chance to shine. Each played in two games in the Prospects Challenge and Sweeney liked what he saw during the early stages of the job battle.
