Buying used clothes at places like the “Pretty Smart” second hand sale in Nelson is an example of everyday things people can do to reduce waste and protect the planet, environmental campaigners say. Schoolgirl Sophie Weenink made it into the Reader’s Digest when, aged 13, she organised a beach clean up in Nelson that netted over 200kg of rubbish. Two years on, she has bought an electric skateboard, and made a habit of buying locally-produced food and second-hand clothes to try to help reduce greenhouse gas emissions and waste. “We just have to be smart about what we’re purchasing,” said Weenink, sporting an op shop-bought dress.
