Côte d’Ivoire security post near Burkina Faso border attacked

A security post close to Côte d’Ivoire’s border to the north with Burkina Faso was attacked during the early hours of Monday morning by a group on unknown assailants, according to a security official. A resident who also spoke to AFP said two people were killed in the attack. Côte d’Ivoire shares a 550-kilometer border with Burkina Faso, where jihadist violence has claimed the lives of hundreds of people and displaced hundreds of thousands of others. In June last year, suspected jihadists believed to have come from Burkina Faso attacked the border post killing at least 12 soldiers and injuring at least seven. That attack was the worst in Côte d’Ivoire since gunmen from Al-Qaeda’s North African branch raided the beach resort of Grand Bassam in March 2016, killing 19 people.
