CAF scraps off the CHAN tournament after 8 editions

The biennial African Nations Championship (CHAN), a tournament tailor-made for local based players which was launched in 2009, has come to a sudden end. This was revealed by the Confederation of African President Patrice Motsepe, who in Saturday’s press conference termed the tournament unsuitable and said it will be replaced by the annual African Nations League. Morocco won the last 8th edition, which was co-hosted by Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania last August, becoming the most successful nation with three titles. The 2018 championship was staged in Morocco, with the host lifting it and going on to defend it two years later in Cameroon. Algeria defeated hosts Senegal in 2020 in penalties to win their maiden trophy before Morocco lifted the title in last year’s edition, whose final was played in Nairobi.
