An empty jet would fly along as a backup, in case there was a mechanical problem with the first jet. Mr. Immelt claims he did not know about this practice and when it was brought to his attention in 2014 he ordered the practice stopped. However, the Wall Street Journal documented additional occurrences after this. Mr. Immelt, however, has done well. The New York Times reported on a letter that Mr. Immelt wrote to GE’s lead director explaining the situation.
