CHR urged to stand up for rights of coal-impacted fishing communities

MANILA, Philippines — Fishermen and young environmental advocates called on the Commission on Human Rights to stand up for coal-impacted communities in Bataan by releasing a strong resolution on the investigation into corporate responsibility for the climate crisis. They also gathered letters from Bataan households detailing the struggles of communities amid the climate crisis. “This continues to get worse because of the destructive coal plants in our community, which cause sickness and environmental degradation…. They urged the commission to act with urgency in protecting the lives, livelihood, and future of their families. In 2015, typhoon survivors and civil society groups filed a complaint before the CHR, calling for probe into the possible human rights violations of 47 fossil fuel and cement companies resulting from climate change.
