Cabinet approves nuclear waste management Policy


A draft policy titled ‘National Policy on Radioactive Waste and Spent Nuclear Fuel Management-2019’ got approved in a cabinet meeting held on Monday in presence of the Prime Minister as the chair of the meeting. According to the approved policy, the government will form a company named ‘Radioactive Waste Management Company (RWMC)’ under the Bangladeshi company act to manage the disposal of radioactive waste. According to the international rules, radioactive waste producers are bound to bear the expenses of their waste management says the policy. The radioactive waste producers are bound to keep and store the waste to them for up to 10 years, according to the policy. Shafiul Alam said that whoever produces radioactive waste is responsible for the waste management thus bearing the cost of waste management and this is the globally accepted practice in this field.
