California leaders are weighing the pros and cons of using artificial intelligence in state government. Gavin Newsom, provides a glimpse into how California could apply the technology to state programs even as lawmakers grapple with how to protect people without hindering innovation. Newsom called the AI report an “important first step” as the state weighs some of the safety concerns that come with AI. For example, state employees shouldn’t provide Californians’ data to generative AI tools such as ChatGPT or Google Bard or use unapproved tools on state devices, the report said. In October, President Biden issued an executive order that outlined standards around safety and security as developers create new AI tools.
